UAV – UAS
A flying Drone is an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) – Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) is the vehicle and ground-station equipment. I would add that these UAV’s should be capable of autonomous flight without human input to truly be a considered drone, a robot that flies.
I remember in the movies and cartoons a drone was an usually an evil robot or army of zombie robots. Boy have things changed.
The RC Hobby industry and flying camera manufactures have plied on and called anything that flies with a remote control a drone.
Many long time RC enthusiasts view the word drone negatively and associate the term with a gun missile carrying military UAV. The military has coined a completely new term for it’s remote controlled and autonomous aerial systems.
We’ll have to look that one up , it’s hard to keep up with all of the new terminology as this technology advances and the public opinions of it change.
RC enthusiasts prefer the term multirotor to describe quad-copters, tri-copters, hexacopters, octo-copters and other remote controlled helicopter like flyer’s with multiple rotors.
Then we have remote controlled airplanes with auto pilot systems or flight controllers which are also sometimes referred to as drones. These operate via fly-by-wire method when the flight controller is activated. The RC Pilot inputs what he wants the plane to do via the transmitter sticks the the flight controller interrupts and corrects the commands to keep the plane level and stabilized while in flight.
Return to Home – Return to Launch
Some more complex flight controllers with GPS are capable of fully autonomous flight. Many have simpler return to home or return to land features. Less expensive simpler flight stabilizers are just designed to keep the plane stabilized by correcting or toning down the operators stick inputs.
Multi-rotors have to have some type of flight controller while airplanes can be flown without having one installed via transmitter and receiver.
